Town of Greenburgh
Trying to explain Greenburgh is not an easy task! The Town of Greenburgh is made up of approximately 90k people and includes Unincorporated Greenburgh, 6 Villages , 10 School District, 7 Fire Protection Districts, 3 Fire Departments, and 2 Town budgets. It’s a complicated setup and it can get confusing. For example, parts of Greenburgh have a White Plains address. Then there are school districts which do not have coterminous boundaries with their villages. Example, you can live in Ardsley School District, but not in Ardsley village.
Greenburgh government- The Greenburgh Town Board is made up of 5 individuals all with equal votes. There are 4 Town Board members who serve 4 year terms with 2 spots being elected every 2 years. There is also a full time Supervisor who serves a 2 year term. The position of Town clerk is also an elected position that serves a 2 year term.
Villages and Unincorporated Greenburgh- There are 6 villages in Greenburgh, Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Hastings on Hudson, Irvington and Tarrytown. Unincorporated Greenburgh is primarily composed of Hartsdale, Fairview and Edgemont but also includes parts of East Irvington, South Ardsley and North Elmsford.
The Two Budgets- Greenburgh has two separate budgets. One is paid for by all residents and one by only those in Unincorporated. Those residents who live in villages get most of their local services(Police, Sanitation, Parks….) from their village governments. Unincorporated residents receive most of their local services from the town.
School Districts- There are parts of 10 school districts in Greenburgh. Some school districts are completely within Greenburgh, others are partially within Greenburgh Boundaries.
